West Ranch Varsity Girls basketball is about to end its season with an overall record of eleven wins and 15 losses. This season has been full of improvement and growth as the team continues to get better. The team finished fifth in the Foothill League, having an average of 33 points per game.
Forward sophomore Grace Manning’s highlight of the season was their first game against Castaic. The Wildcats dominated the Coyotes with a final score of 41-21 and displayed their skills both offensively and defensively. This win was only the first win of the two against the Castaic Coyotes. In this game, they would score six points more than their second win in the following month.
Forward Freshman Hadassah Okewoye shared that her favorite moment was their tournament the day after Christmas: “We all bonded and got a lot closer during that time.” During this tournament the team played Mary Star of the Sea; they won 48-28, making this their seventh win of the season. This win also marked their third consecutive winning streak.
This year’s team introduced many new players to Varsity Basketball. These players learned new skills and improved in lots of areas throughout the season. Coach Paul Gross shared that this team’s understanding of their objectives and goals has been a definite advancement. “They have definitely gotten a better understanding of what plays we have been trying to run,” he said.
The team has also showcased their improvement offensively. Manning reflected on the team’s growth throughout the season: “We have definitely improved on our ball handling skills and shooting skills.” Their highest-scoring game was against Vaughn High School, scoring 62 points and allowing only seven.
Okewoye added that their team has also progressed their defensive skills. “We are able to make sure the other teams are not scoring points as easily and securing the win,” she explained. This adjustment has allowed the team to limit opponents and give their offense opportunities for scoring drives.
Although there have been many positive moments this season, the team still has skills they can work on. Manning shared that being able to “read each other well and continue working well with each other” will continue to enhance this team’s execution.
Coach Gross added that the team needs to continue working on their fundamentals: “We struggle sometimes fundamentally and that is a very important part of the game.” Mastering the little details will help the team advance technically and in their performance during games.
The Wildcats have grown and developed both as players and as a team from both their wins and losses this season. Make sure you come and show your support next season!
