This school year, West Ranch has added a new sport to its list of athletics: Girls Flag Football. Girls Flag Football has recently been expanding throughout the country and has even been entered as a sport in the 2028 Summer Olympics. High schools across the valley including Hart, Valencia, Vasquez and now West Ranch have made this addition, giving girls the opportunity to play a sport many have dreamed of playing.
Since they were young, numerous female athletes have had a passion for playing football, but have never had the opportunity to compete. Freshman Kara Carnes shared her experience: “I always loved playing catch with my dad and brother, so I was really excited when I found out I’d have the chance to play in high school.”
Other students had the opportunity to witness the sport being played through family and friends. Senior Inaya Harsolia was able to attend flag football games through her family: “I would go to my brother’s games, watch him play and help my dad coach, but I was never able to play with just girls.”
In addition to this exciting opportunity, the girls have developed a bond and connection with each other that they wouldn’t have otherwise. When asked about her favorite part of the sport, Freshman Gretchen Roen mentioned, “I really love the girls and how well we all get along.”
The team’s strong connection is often portrayed on the field through trust and encouragement. Coach Ortiz emphasized the importance of team chemistry: “Teamwork is really important. You need both the offense and defense to be successful in order to succeed.”
Carnes expressed her appreciation towards all the encouragement she has received, “My teammates are always really supportive and we have all become really great friends.” This team’s strong relationship with each other is an important factor that contributes to their success on the field.
Along with the girls’ support of one another, they are also motivated by their three coaches. Coach Arif Harsolia, Coach Will Ortiz, and Coach Mark Hornberger have all made positive contributions that have made this season enjoyable. The coaches have helped the girls have a great season and a fun time.
When asked about his goal for the season, Coach Ortiz said, “Having a good time, building a good camaraderie, and growing this sport here at West Ranch.” The support of these coaches and their dedication to this team have helped this team improve throughout the season and have made this an exciting and entertaining experience.
This inaugural season has allowed the team to have a lasting impact on the school and the players. The players have gained skills that are helpful in everyday situations. Carnes and Harsolia both expressed how this team has helped them develop leadership skills. This includes motivating and encouraging their teammates when something doesn’t go as planned. Roen added that this sport has given her the ability to “stay calm under pressure.” This skill can allow her to thrive in other situations as well as stressful situations at school.
Flag Football has had a lasting influence on the players and coaches who participated and will continue to impact its athletes for years to come. Coach Ortiz expressed his main goal: “We want to continue this legacy here at West Ranch for years to come and ultimately bring home a banner for girls flag football.” This season has gifted athletes the chance to play a new and growing sport, foster strong relationships, and learn skills that will benefit them for the rest of their life.
