With the final leaves scattering across the ground and frost gradually replacing the morning dew on windows, winter has come to West Ranch, and students have begun preparation for the holidays. On Dec. 11, the seniors class decorated and lit up a Christmas tree from 6-8 p.m. with handmade ornaments. Playing Christmas songs in the background, the class of 2025 was able to celebrate their last holiday season in high school at the annual Senior Tree Lighting.
This tree-lighting tradition, which began with the class of 2022, was fueled by a need to warm up holiday gatherings after quarantine. The seniors collaborated with ASB to set up a small tree and lights on campus to celebrate the return of winter. ASB advisor Mrs. Priske described the tradition’s origins: “The class of 2022 wanted to do something outside that’s festive. We just came back from quarantine and a time of being social-distanced.”
Attending seniors were given wooden ornaments to personalize with their names and designs. Once satisfied, students hung their ornaments on the tree. Along with the ornaments, hot chocolate and Chick-fil-A sandwiches were offered to keep students warm and full despite the frosty evening. Senior Joshua Farahdel expressed, “I thought the addition of Chick-fil-A and hot chocolate complimented the event very well. It helped set the spirit of the event.”
This event was made possible by the passion and festive spirit of ASB leadership. From setting up the tree to hanging decorations around the upper quad, the students and staff behind ASB worked hard to make this night a memorable one. Executive board vice president Tashvi Ratnani expressed their resilience while setting up the event: “Every year is a struggle with the tree, but I think we pulled through, and I am proud of ASB getting this together.” Regardless of the challenges, ASB’s determination shone through to create an inviting space that brought the seniors together during the holiday season.
With a final greeting to the holiday season in their high school years, the class of 2025 closed out the event with a group photo, encapsulating the memories made in this tree lighting ceremony. Cats, look out for future ASB events as there are many more to come for the second semester!
