Local farmer’s markets serve as a vibrant hub for small businesses to promote their businesses and stimulate community engagement. From fresh produce to homemade cuisine, vendors at the Old Town Newhall Farmers Market gather every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. under colorful booths to share their passion for locally sourced and handcrafted goods with the SCV community. The Paw Print interviewed some of the vendors at this farmers market about their experiences owning a business.
Catherine Froniod, owner of Slow Stir Foods, is among these dedicated vendors. She started her business in 2020 to create nut butter and jams using local ingredients. “I love seeing the joy on customers’ faces, especially the kids when they try our products,” Froniod expressed.
Many of the customers at the market appear weekly, making it a tradition to check out the new products. Families that spend their Sunday mornings at these markers collaborate and foster a sense of community among each other. When asked about her favorite part of vending at the farmers market, Froniod replied, “The community and customers are awesome. They understand good quality food. They’re willing to invest in buying good, quality food. And the market managers here are some of the best people. I really love being a part of it.” The friendly faces and amiable atmosphere are some of the many things that make this market a town favorite.
Another seller is Elijah Starns, the founder of Eli’s Elixirs. Originally a chef, he began making juices that quickly gained popularity. Now, three years after starting his business, Starns remains selling in the market, emphasizing the importance of health-focused products. His biggest inspiration for selling at the Old Town Newhall market is “connecting with other vendors and customers who support healthy living.”
Starns, when asked about his favorite part of selling at the market, described his love for the community: “They are very supportive, there are a lot of healthy people, so that helps my business. I just enjoy learning and experiencing and sharing with other vendors, hearing their story kind of like how you’re hearing my story right now.” As the Old Town Newhall market supports small businesses of all kinds, customers are assured that their earnings go back to the community.
Emma Venico, who works part-time at a coffee stand in the market, has visited the market a few times and has always enjoyed her experience. She appreciates the friendly atmosphere, contrasting it with grocery stores. “People here talk to each other, and there’s a real sense of community,” Venico noted. Providing not only essentials for many adults, the market also caters to children. The live music, distinctive gift shops and abundance of diverse food options make the market a place for people of all ages.
The market continues to thrive, fostering relationships and providing a platform for small businesses to grow. With its blend of fresh produce, homemade goods and meaningful connections, the Old Town Newhall Farmers Market stands as a testament to the power of local commerce and community spirit.
